Why We Create

At Come From Away Carvings, we design one-of-a-kind bark and wood carvings that reflect Newfoundland’s beauty and wildlife. Our dedication to craftsmanship prioritizes quality and environmental sustainability.

Handcrafted Excellence

Every carving is made by hand, ensuring each piece is one-of-a-kind. We prioritize traditional craftsmanship, avoiding the use of power tools whenever possible to maintain the authenticity of our work.

Respect for Nature

We are committed to using eco-friendly materials and sustainable practices. Our work not only reflects the natural world but actively contributes to preserving it.

Canadian-Made

We take pride in using Canadian-sourced materials, supporting local industries, and highlighting the artistry that comes from our country’s rich heritage.

Celebrating Newfoundland

Our carvings are inspired by the stunning landscapes and wildlife of Newfoundland. Through our art, we aim to showcase the island’s natural beauty to clients far and wide.

Nathan Keil

Founder, Come From Away Carvings
Nathan Keil grew up in Listowel, Ontario, and moved to St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador, in 2014 to study Nautical Science. He began his journey into wood carving in late 2017 as a self-taught artist, inspired by his mother’s cousin, Don Moore, a seasoned wood carver. Nathan focuses on soft woods and barks, using traditional hand tools to create unique pieces that reflect Newfoundland’s stunning landscapes and wildlife, particularly whales and puffins.
In January 2020, with encouragement from family and friends, Nathan started selling his carvings part-time, participating in local craft markets and eventually launching an Etsy shop, which broadened his reach across Canada and the United States. By May 2023, he transitioned to carving full-time at Quidi Vidi Village Artisan Studios, where he has found a strong market among tourists. Nathan continues to refine his craft, aiming for further growth and new projects in wood carving and sculpture.
